Smart Paladin

81% Combativeness, 46% Sneakiness, 55% Intellect, 55% Spirituality

Valorous! Noble! Or possibly just a self-righteous jerk (but with the
brains to keep you alive!)... You are a Smart Paladin!

Paladins are holy warriors. They are valorous defenders of the
light. Unfortunately, most of them are so ardent in their defense they
tend to meet sticky ends faster than you can say "rampaging red
dragon." Many people look up to Paladins, while others just consider
them stuck up, overbearing, or self-righteous.

Fortunately for you, unlike most Paladins, you're pretty smart.
Which means that you're more likely to fall into the "admired"
category, rather than the "obnoxious" or "dead" categories.

Much like the crusades, you manage to combine violence and
religion, though unlike the crusades, you add a healthy does of
intelligence. You may be a staunch defender of the faith, a valorous
champion of the weak, or the stuff that jihads are made of. Which ever
one you are, just be happy that youve got the smarts to back it up and
make it work.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

after a wonderful time hiking around Los Alamos and hanging with kick ass buds, i actually drove 34 hours across nine states! (only a two hour break just before the next dawn to rest)

ah... the mind numbing beauty of books on cd!

it was so welcoming to be treated to a couple of nights of dinners, movies, computer games, and wine with friends in upstate NY before completing the final leg of my journey home today

after unpacking the truck, hugging mom and gram, petting my kitty whom i missed so much... i delighted in a hometown ice cream cone and a sunset on the hill... surrounded by rolling mountains and glorious trees!

oh... how good it is to be home :)

so i finally managed to make it down to mexico before headin out
braved some spicy food, bought a hat, and tried to speak a little spanish (dad would be proud)

after a short journey northward i ended up at Carlsbad Caverns in NM
LOVED it so much i spent four days there :)
the caverns were ... ****incredible*****
words cannot do the description of it justice
and the bat flights for dawn and dusk where amazing too
definitely put it on your list of places to visit someday.. it's well worth it!

now i'm enjoying visiting friends (Mouser & company, and tomorrow Nina arrives :) in Los Alamos, NM
i did some great hiking in and among the ancient Indian ruins at Bandelier National Monument
and trekked all around the mesa tops with some spectacular views
stopped by the Bradbury Museum as well to learn all about the Lab
(tons of really neat info... only made it through half the place before they kicked me out to close!)

so tomorrow i'm hiking the Falls trails at the park and visitin the Ceremonial huts high up on the cliffs
then hanging with the lovely lady Nina and her kick ass boy for a couple more days
after that, it's back on the road home :)

may the gas prices continue to drop!

tonight I’ll sing my songs again
i’ll play the game and pretend
but all my words come back to me
in shades of mediocrity
like emptyness in harmony
i need someone to comfort me

homeward bound
(oh... i am)
homeward bound
home, where my thought’s escaping
home, where my music’s playing
home, where my love lies waiting
silently for me

you would not believe the storm that hit last night.  my truck hood
looks like the bottom of a frickin egg crate!
(thank god mum opted for the hail insurance)

I had just managed to make it back to the house as the quarter sized
hail started plunking on the truck... black clouds had been churning
in the sky for a while as three storms merged overhead...

then, while sitting at my table.. i was suddenly bombarded by glass and hail
that had crashed through the back window (and through two rooms) to slam into the
back of my head and the inside wall on the opposite side of the house!!!

i was using the garbage can lid as a shield to get the door to the room closed when
two more windows smashed and the wind whipped hail and rain throughout
the entire house..

the world *roared* for a half hour more as the power box out in the yard
repeatedly showered sparks, putting off enough light for me to find my flashlight
and start cleaning hail rocks off my bed!

never have i been so nervous of the weather in all my life....

have you been thinking that you were all alone
but i still thought of you
word every once in a while forgetting that
some of it could be true

held in the beam of a light i thought we shared
shone between two shores
and wants to be traveled like the gravel that
runs from my door to yours

i'll be way down the silver road, i'll go
where the moon has it lit up
turn off your headlights and go slowly
i don't want it to let up

one of my favorite pastimes this summer is to sit out at the towers in my truck, long after the sun's gone down, and watch the amazing heat lightening that frequents the night sky..

huge white and black puffy clouds will light up on the horizon, stretching out above me. long arcs of white energy reaching across the sky... illuminating the contours of clouds above and below. the lightening is so frequent you can practically read by it and often lives long enough for you to look a bolt up and down! it usually stays up in the clouds, but occasionally it blazes down to the earth with such intensity you expect to be rocked by the thunder

... yet it never comes.
these are silent storms...

where thick night air swallows all the rumbles

.. and leaves you in silence

..and in awe :)

Aug. 20th, 2005 @ 03:04 pm webs
last night, as the day came to a close and the sunset lit up the world with shades of orange and purple, i watched my desert friends build her web. she always waits until sunset to start spinning and carefully takes her evening creations down every morning.

my friend's body is about the size of a nickel with elegant bright yellow and black markings. her legs are long and agile, with gray joints and black toes. each web seems to me a masterpiece and she varies its style and size every night by altering the points of contact with posts and ground.

during the day she slumbers in the folds of my tarp blind, sleeping through the heat when her prey is least active... but as the sun hits the mountains i can always count on her to emerge, stretch, and begin her delicate and dedicated work, taking her time weavingd around and around, as if dancing through the air. by the time the moon rises from the south east it's glow strikes an incredible pattern the size of your attic window, completing her creation of beautiful survival

well, the storms are nice...

not only for their spectacular lightening and thunder but for their cooler winds and milder temperatures that follow them...

without storms the thermometer pushes over 100 degrees again (ugh)
::sweat sweat::

next week marks the start of every other day feedings for the fledglings,
which also marks the start of closing down the site

boxes to paint
electric fences take down
pea-gravel to change out
tarps to take down
etc. etc. etc.

according to my calculations, i only have around six sunrises left!!! :(
i mean... i am *wicked* happy to be heading home soon,
back to everything i miss so much...

... but

well..

... how'd a chowda luving, forest dwelling, mountain climbing, New England skier fall in love with the southwest?!

i will miss it all *very much*

what an eventful day yesterday...

just barely managed to miss stepping on the first rattle snake i've seen out at the towers!
(man, those suckers can move :P

then in the evening i heard this strange noise coming across the plains..
sometimes you can hear the wind coming long before you feel it,
so i thought it might be a strange gust of wind
then i see this strange large cloud hanging low in the air
and heading strait for me!

just managed to crouch to the ground before a HUGE swarm of bees swirled overhead!
it sounded like a bunch of race cars driving over as the cloud moved on west

couple of close calls... but an adventurously interesting day :)

Current Mood: good
hey folks!

new photos up on http://www.flickr.com/photos/sleepingeagle/

the fledglings are doing great, fourth batch made it to the critical 21 days... only one group left to go!

luckily the pesky Harrier group's gettin a dose of their own medicine with some eager to mob falcons emerging from the older crowd :) and with twenty four versions of death on wings flying about i haven't seen too many more song birds in the immediate area lately. thunderstorms are pretty regular now in the evenings, but the lightening show is great while you're stuck in the mud!

because the crew is getting older now, and learning to hunt for themselves, i get the rare but treasured day off occasionally... so i've managed to get down here to the Marfa book store for Wi-Fi bliss, visit some local art galleries, take some bike rides out on the trails, visit some kick ass bouldering spots, and enjoy some a wine tasting from the local vineyard. Tonight I'm heading up to the McDonald Observatory for one of their star parties to view the heavens through their massive telescopes and next week i'm going to hit the Marfa Lights viewing area around one in the morning with all the other "unexplained event lovers" to watch the balls of light dance out in the fields

Here till the first week in September and then taking a leisurely drive with many visits and stops on the way home :)

hope all is well with you!

if you haven't gotten an invite to see'em let me know cuz i didn't want
to put them all up on "public" for the world (and parents) to
scrutinize.  I'm still up for putting together a CD of everyone's
photos... so slap all your shots onto a cd and mail'em out to:

Sarah Goodwin
Peregrine Fund/Miller Ranch
Valentine, TX 79854

where i'll be until mid-September... after that I'll be back in the valley! :)

I'll be sure to compile everyone's shots and contact info, so give me
an address to send it out to too.  also... please forward this
onto people i don't have contact info for. (ie. Danielle, Shawn, Rob,
Megan, etc.)

after some storm delays and early morning, bleary eyed driving,
I've managed to make it back to my summer post up here on the messa
and the falcons are doing fine :)

have a great summer friends!

looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Jul. 8th, 2005 @ 11:23 pm enjoyin the summer
last night...

in left corner of the sky, an incredible sunset setting aflame all the low cruisin clouds heading over the plateau mountains to the west

look right to the other corner and watch the most spectacular lightening display with complete fanned out bolts of electricity from the dark storm clouds hovering over the mountain to the east

...and all around the sounds of crickets, frogs, falcons chittering, coyotes singing in chorus, and kit foxes play fighting as the new moon rises in the western sky and the stars began to pack the darkness overhead

munchin on cheezits and gettin handed a beer just completed paradise for the evening. :)
